2015, Here I Come

Aloha!

SO, it's that time of year again. The New year-New me' s are taking over all social media timelines and pages. It is a time of new beginnings and fresh starts, a clean slate for us all. It is also a time to reflect on the past year, I think this part of New years is more important than the new years resolutions. If you don't take time to acknowledge your achievements and downfalls, to appreciate the past years events, to evaluate yourself and use this time to get to know yourself- how are you meant to make proper resolutions that might actually be beneficial?

2014 has been a pretty good year for me, for one thing, I started this blog. And even if it hasn't taken the world by storm, it has been a great outlet for me and a great satisfaction to get over 800 page views. This year I feel that I have grown closer to my friends and I have deepened relationships. In particular, the end of this year- these past couple of months- have been great. I feel really fulfilled and I have gotten involved with so many things, met new people and I just feel like I'm sort of finding my place. This probably doesn't make sense. But I think that sense of fulfillment is so important in life and at the moment I feel really content having found that.

I have tried and been apart of a few things this year that I've really enjoyed and I feel that I'm findings things that I like and am discovering new passions. This year I was Richard in Richard III (in a SSF production) I was chosen to be in the debate team, starting attending my boroughs youth council, and started this blog.

I hope 2015 will be a good year for me. It is certainly off to an exciting start as I am a candidate in the 2015 Youth elections, the voting takes place in early February so I am looking forward to starting my campaign in the new year. (I will hopefully write a blog post about the elections in more depth). This year I haven't really made any resolutions but I aim to take hold of opportunities and get involved with projects, I want to explore more areas and become more of a distinct individual. I also hope to write on this blog more often and write more varied types of posts.

I hope you have a great New Years whatever you have planned, and I hope to see you again next year in 2015!

For the last time in 2014,

This I-world

In this word today, we are full of I-things, I phones, I pads, I pods, its just a matter of time before we all turn to the I-life. All caring about ourselves and the air of selfishness that everyone seems to be living and breathing with. Already, I see it around me, The girl who makes fun of others to make herself look better,The older sister who'd rather wallow in her own trivial matters than to pick up her younger siblings from school.Slowly, we are becoming such an anti-social society, and whats more is that people have stopped caring. It seems that people are relishing in their own bubble of life. But what is a life without others? Without true friendships? Without peace and compassion?

When is a selfie going to a be a wefie? I know it seems sort of odd to talk about this in terms of pictures. But we are cultivating a mentality of isolation and selfishness. Even in our colloquial mannerisms we are advocating this I-world.

And to be honest, even one person can tackle this issue for the masses. One persons actions can radiate in their communities and societies and really make a difference. I urge you to reach out to people around you and I encourage everyone to care a little bit more about others. If not to better ourselves, we have to start caring more to protect future generations.

#ICAN'TBREATHE

So you probably have heard about the Ferguson shooting of Michael Brown and the choking of Eric Garner. What strikes me is that the USA is known as a sort of modern day utopia yet they are clearly not as developed as its given off. Why are they the hub and perfect example of modernity and liberty when fundamental human rights are not adhered to? Racism is not a new issue, it has been here probably since the beginning, so why does it still exist? If we can create machines that can replace humans, if we can print out food, why can't we coexist with each other, no matter what race, gender, ethnicity?

It is shocking how people still have a racist mentality; it is socially damaging. As a teen who has lived in London my whole life, I've grown up with people of all different races and its great. In fact, it would be weird not seeing other races because I'm lucky enough to live in a place which promotes social cohesion.

Today, in school, my friends and I were talking about the whole ordeal. And I think being people who see no difference with other races, its just disgusting. I'm so happy I live in a city where racial integration is the norm.

America is always said to be the "Land of the free", yet the reason they have a country as a result of genocide, slavery and land theft. How are the people of America free? When a person is murdered and the murderer is consciously not charged? Set aside race, murder is murder. When a person is killed, why should their race decide if their murderer is punished? They are people stripped of life by another mans hands.

More people are being convicted and killed, I only hope the world can rise up above a hashtag and actually do something.

I Need To Blog

Hello,

So I am aware that i haven't blogged in ages, and to be honest its because I haven't really had anything to blog about. All ideas that i had were a bit naff and just boring but I need to get back into the swing of things so I just thought I'd share a few random things and thoughts.

The first thing I would like to say is, Creativity is hard, Now, Im not a particularly creative person but when I try to be its quite difficult. Sometimes I get drunk on creativity and write about a thousand spoken words and decoupage things but then I sort of lose creativity for a while, I guess thats whats demonstrated by my irregular blog posting. I don't know- just a thought.

The next thing is a bit of a rant, and I know its quite trendy these days to be positive but this is quite negative. People these days are so full of themselves. I think its quite good for the soul to have a bit of humility but I've met a coupla people this week who just think they're the reason God made humanity. Now, Im all about self confidence but there is a line between confidence and arrogance. I think too much confidence is damaging to an individual and sometimes its just nice to be a bit humble and modest.

I don't want to bore you for any longer but I'd just like to share this amazing video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XjJQBjWYDTs its the always, like a girl video. This video is so good because it shows girls of different ages and how much views can be changed and influenced as you get older.

So this was just to get back into this blogging shebang and I'd just like to say thank you to the 1 follower of my blog. Thank you very much, There will probably be a proper post soon.

Comparison Is The Thief Of Joy

 Hello,
This post is going to be about comparison. Theodore Roosevelt once said "comparison is the thief of joy"To me, this means that you can never truly be happy whilst comparing yourself to others. This might mean comparison in terms of appearance, life,work-anything really. When you compare yourself to others, it tends to be your flaws against their positive attributes.

In this society, we all have a tendency to compare ourselves to our peers. But why? Why do we feel that a valid comparison can be made out of two completely different and distinctive people? Its because we categorise certain  people of being perfect and something to aspire to, and whilst doing this we overlook our own perfections.

Carrie hope fletcher wrote a line in her letter to my 16 year old self (which you can see here) that struck a chord with me.  She wrote in her blog:
You’re not them and they’re not you
                             and holy crap that’s nice
so stop comparing, start self caring

This is so relevant to todays teenager. We all compare ourselves to other people and care so  much about trying to be like them that we  forget to care about ourselves. You are not the other person and that is a GOOD thing. I can't stress enough how nice it is that you are yourself and that no two people are the same.

This week I am going to try not to compare myself to other people and actually take time to care about myself.

What a wonderful world

What a wonderful world we live in,

Skies are blue and clouds, white where teenage girls worry about the amount of insulating material on their bodies. Isn't it wonderful to hear babies crying because they don't have clean water to drink and no medicine to sooth their pains. We are so ignorant to the worlds problems. Its wonderful how there are wars everyday, over land and in our minds. Hundreds of people die and all we can think about is snapchatting our friends. Children are starving and ceasing to exist whilst others spend hundreds on a bag no bigger than a pencil case. The world, in my eyes, is not wonderful.

Is it wonderful how people find salvation in cutting into the tender flesh of their own bodies? Battles go on everyday, the biggest is the battle with ourselves and in our minds. Some children wonderfully dont know how to read or write whilst others bunk off school. Is the world really a great place, as we all think of it?

Is the world fair? No, it isn't. There is hardly anything that IS fair in this world. I know it, you know it, we all know it yet we chose to remain ignorant. Perhaps the worlds predicaments are inevitable or perhaps its just human nature. I know we, as normal people, can't really do anything about it, but we all have the opportunity to change the world even if it is only the little bit of the world around us.

The world isnt really wonderful, But we can all do a little bit to change that.

A Whole New Attitude

Hello,

So, like most of you, last week I went back to school to start year 10. I decided to go back with a whole new world  attitude. Instead of complaining I am taking it upon myself to appreciate what I do have. On my first day of school we were walking to our new form room when loads of people started complaining about the stairs, just when I was about to join them, I stopped and thought about people who don't even have a school with stairs and how lucky we are to have a school with multiple classrooms and floors. I mean, in some parts of the world, the ceiling is a canopy of leaves and branches so we are so lucky to even be in a building. One thing that really struck me is that some girls were complaining about not having air conditioning in our form room. What kind of world do we live in where people are in extreme hot conditions without so much as a fan and people are complaining about being in a mostly cold country without air conditioning?

Yes, it is sort of annoying having to walk up a couple of stairwells every morning but we do have water bottles in our bags, its not like we have to walk a couple of miles to collect water that might give us cholera just to quench our thirsts. Loads of people, and I admit;even myself sometimes, moan about such trivial things that really have no importance in the grand scheme of things. This academic year, I am going try to appreciate things a lot more and I think that if more people concentrated on what we do have rather than what we don't, it would be such a better environment. Teenagers now think they are in the worst possible predicament when really they are so privileged.

I hope I have given you some food for thought and I encourage you to realise that your situation is probably not the end of the world and instead of moaning about trivial things, take time to appreciate all that you do have.

Have a great time back at school,
Amani x

Life is too short to live the same day twice

Hello!

So summer is nearing the end (yipeeee) and a new term begins. I hope everyone who got their exam results are extremely satisfied and are moving on to greener pastures. This year I am going to year 10 and I am constantly reminded of how my GCSEs are coming and how this is an important stage in my life. One thing that often goes with this reminder is: 'Amani, What do you want to be when you're older?'. My first instinct is to reply with my dream, ' a paediatric oncologist' but to be honest I want to be so many things; I'd love to work in journalism or fashion. I'd love to be in the west end and work backstage at Les Mis. I'm inspired by so many people and so many things. I think the thing i really want to be in the future is happy. Not really the cliché happily ever after happy but happy as in being content with my self and what I've become. I don't really know what else to say, I want to be so many things- life is too short to live  the same day twice.

This is just a short post to get back into the swing of this blogging shebang!
See you soon

Painting on a Mona Lisa smile

Recently I watched the film Mona Lisa Smile starring Julia Roberts and Kirsten Dunst. Its a really inspirational film set in the 50s. Overall the film was really good but there was something in particular that really struck me. In the film she says something  like "look at the mona lisa's smile.  Is she happy? who cares she's smiling" (this isnt the exact quote but something of the sort) This bit really struck me because I realised just how much it applies to todays society. When we look at a person, if they're smiling we automatically think they are happy when really, if you look at the bigger picture their eyes can tell you that they're hurting. One look at a person and we know their feelings, if somethings not quite right - it doesn't matter, people tend just to turn the other way and not see that inside most people,no matter how strong and self actualized they seem,  is just a child screaming for help and attention. When you go on the internet, it is so easy to find these depressed suicidal teenagers, but are they really what they seem? And are those teens, that you see posting pictures of themselves having the time of their lives, really happy? Or is that instagram account just their mona lisa smile? I don't know if this blog post makes sense, I'm just sort of typing my thoughts. I guess what I'm trying to say is that some people are just tied together with a smile and hide their emotions. Im also trying to say that people don't really care about other people enough that they just take the first thing they see, be it a smile, and let that dictate the other persons mood.I think that we all do it at times- we put on a smile to hide what we are actually feeling but that only suppresses the emotion it doesn't deal with it. I guess its just human nature.
If anybody actually reads my blog(!) and feels like they're hiding away then I'd just like to say that I hope you can stop painting on your mona lisa smile and feel comfortable with yourself enough to tell people or even just come to terms with yourself.

Living life through a screen

 Aloha,

Sorry I havent blogged in ages, I've just been quite busy doing nothing and have just lacked inspiration. This post is about something I've noticed and observed people doing: Living life through a screen

Many people are often quite shocked on hearing that I, a 14 year old girl, does not own a mobile phone. (yes, its true) Most people assume its because of money or parental issues but the truth is; I honestly dont feel the need to have one. I dont want a phone. I don't really want people to have all the time access to me, absence makes the heart stronger! And of course people ask: what about instagram and such shennanigans? To that I say 'why take pictures of my life when I can actually LIVE it?' Recently I went on a school trip to Ypres, Belgium and I noticed that some people literally lived on their phones; instagramming, games and such things. What is the point of spending your time trying to get the perfect picture to get loads of likes when you miss out on whats right in front of you.

I think having social media is inevitable but I think people need to just raise their heads a bit and realise that there is a life beyond their screens. There are some people that are so fixated on their phones and gizmos that they forget to create memories and actually live. I mean, imagine if technology had existed in the past like it does now; Bronte would probably be selecting a cool filter for her photo of the moors rather than putting pen to paper and writing the worlds celebrated literature.

As technology is advancing who knows what future generations will be like? Already, social skills are being lost through wires. We are heading for a world where everyone just lives in screens rather than in the moment.

So, I hope I have made it clear why I don't have a phone- it is by choice because I simply don't believe in them. Especially smart phones.

Knitting Is The New Yoga

I've been knitting for a couple of years now and I feel like more people should get into knitting. Many people have condemned knitting to the predisposition that its for old people but its NOT! Im young, cool and I KNIT. Knitting is a really rewarding way to make things and gifts, as someone who is into fashion I think that knitting, a long with sewing, is a great way to make your own garments and designs that nobody else has! Its all quite easy to pop along to the shops and buy  yourself a hat but why not MAKE one?!
This is a hat that I knitted recently

Some people dont know HOW to get into knitting and there is this notion that a grandmother or relative is meant to teach you but you CAN learn yourself. Youtube is a really good tool to use when learning how to knit also BOOKS! Knitty Gritty is and amazing   book that teaches you everything really simply and without using jargon that nobody understands.

This book is the best knitting book ever!

So to start your knitting adventure I recommend you get the following as a beginner

  • 4 mm knitting needles
  • a cheap skein of yarn to get you going
  • knitty gritty
  • access to youtube
Knitting has also been labelled as the new yoga, its calming, cool and helps your dexterity!
                                                Happy Knitting

My week in music

Aloha friends!- (we are friends, aren't we?!)

I love music, (who doesnt!) and my favourite artists are mostly old bands like The Beatles and The Smiths but I also like music from new bands that people don't necessarily know. (The bands I like, I usually discover from TV advertisements!) I decided to share with you a few songs I just can not get out of my mind! One song for each of the days of the week so far. So here goes!

Wednesday
I went to see Maleficent on wed and Lana del reys Once upon a dream is THE BOMDIGGITY

Saturday (Today!)

A little voice in my head (no, i am not crazy) has been incessantly singing all day. The song stuck in my head is The Smiths- Stretch out and wait

Maleficent Review!

Hello there,

So the very anticipated film; Maleficent, starring Angelina Jolie and Elle Fanning, came out on wednesday and me and a few friends went to watch it. Maleficent is a film showing Maleficent's side of the well known story- Sleeping Beauty.

Overall it was a very good film however quite predictable. I don't want to spoil it for you however there are some bits which are kind of predictable but different form the original story of sleeping beauty. It wasn't a long film which was good because it didn't drag on like some films I've seen recently! Angelina Jolie was really good and played the role excellently. She played the evillness and vulnerability of the character very well. Elle Fanning was also brilliant. I thought she fitted the princess role really well and was very believable in her loving ignorance. I was kind of surprised that  Prince Philip  didn't have a major part in the film but then again that was kind of expected as the film is not a remake of Sleeping Beauty but another side to the story.
In the film there were moments of excitement, sadness and love. I went to watch it in 3D but the 3D aspect was hardly there and want THAT good, you aren't missing anything if you don't watch it in 3d. All in all it was a great film and I'd definitely recommend you to watch it!

FUN FACT: Angelina Jolies daughter played a younger Aurora because they couldn't find a child who wasn't scared of Maleficent.

Im So Down With The Kids

Hello,

Its been a while since I've written a blogpost and I need to get back into this blogging malarkey! I'm sorry I'm not very good at this!So today I wanted to blog about some new "hip" words I've learnt recently. If you know me,you would know that I am not very down with the kids and aged 13 I find it quite difficult engaging in a conversation without saying "Sorry, what does _______ mean?". Whenever I am surfing the interwebs I always find it handy to have Urban Dictionary open in another tab to look up these new fandangled words! A couple of weeks ago I asked a couple of people in my class to teach me some slang words so i can understand people, at first they nearly wet themselves with laughter but then agreed. I have decided to share a few of the words with you today!

Gassed- You use this word when someone compliments you and you get happy. "Im so gassed, she said she liked my shoes"

Pagan- This doesn't mean the old religion, because that would just be RIDICULOUS and no one in the right mind would even suggest that! *looks shiftily side to side * Instead it means PIGEON

Allie-   Im not sure if i spelt this correctly, but this word is used if you agree with something. Its sort of like the urban 'amen'

Peak- This means that somethings bad.

Egit-   I learnt this word yesterday as my friend called me it on twitter. Very confused, I tweeted asking what it means and my good friends at urban dictionary tweeted my back saying it means "idiot"

Wag1- This is a sort of greeting which originates from "whats going on" I at first didnt know this so I began to change the numbers saying wag5! (I dont recommend you saying this to "da kidz" as you will get laughed at profusely)

SO there are 6 words that i wanted to share with you! I learnt more but can't recall some of them, have to wait until after the holidays to be reacquainted with "ma sistaz"! Have a great half term and I will be blogging soon about Maleficent as Im going to see it on wednesday

                                                          Byeeeeeee,

There is no friend as loyal as a book~ Ernest Hemmingway

Greetings!

So this posts is going to based around one of my  favourite things: BOOKS!.
Yesterday, I went to the library and I couldnt help but feel a sense of nostalgia. I found it quite overwhelming thinking of how many visits I have made to this place and how much it has changed- how I've changed. One thing that has stayed with me since I was a little child is my love of books, I have always been fascinated by the power of words and the way you can live different lives, experience different worlds just from reading. I have always loved everything about the library from the variety of people; different ages, races, interests etc to the smell of old and new books. Yesterday when I was looking for a new book,I noticed how I towered over the book cases this made me smile to myself (I must have looked like a total freak!!) because I remembered that long ago when my favourite book was Dogger by Shirley Hughes (which I definitely recommend)
I dreamed of the day when I could see above the ever so big shelves! I think theres something sort of mystical about library books and sometimes I just marvel about their stories, Not the ones they hold in words but the ones they hold in soul. The rough and tumble in somebody's rucksack on their way to school, the strange looks it got when the reader read it on a train, the porthole it had become when the reader needed a safe haven to escape the world around them. I think its quite amazing how library books have been in loads of peoples homes and these people have laughed and cried and felt along with you, in this single book.

To me a book has always been a way to escape and travel the world in the comfort of my own home. I have been to france with Hugo, victorian london with Dickens, a farm with Orwell and the yorkshire moors with Bronte. Rowling took me to Hogsmede as I became a member of the ace gang with Louise Rennison. Shakespeare took me to enchanted forests and to the stormy seas.

Whenever I read a book I particularly enjoy I always like to read more from the author to fully appreciate and delve deeper into their style of writing. At the moment it is Ernest Hemmingway and I am reading "A farewell to arms" and "For whom bells toll". Ive started A farewll to arms and already its amazing!!

I dont believe in being unique.

Helloo there,

So, yesterday I was reading a blog and the blogger wrote a post about being unique. This got me thinking of all the assemblies I have sat through about being unique. It seems that some of the people who give these assemblies are the same people who snigger at someones loud outfit on non uniform day. I know this topic is so overdone but I just wanted to get my points about it across. As I've mentioned before in my "I liked them first" post- everyone wants to be unique. However I dont think anyone actually IS unique. To me this isn't a bad thing. I think that everybody is a collection of qualities they see in others and adopt themselves.I always think that being different is not the same as being unique. Being different is more about standing out from the social environment you are in although there is probably someone just like you some place else. I think that you can have different interests and wear different things but at the end of the day you are not wholly unique. Not being "unique" ,to me, doesnt mean you are not you're own person. Its means you ARE yourself but just reflect attributes that you see in others. I think you can have unique thoughts and characteristics but about more outwardly things like fashion and things likes, that you can never really be unique in this society. And even if you think you are- you're probably not. And thats okay. I think people need to embrace the fact that sometimes they are not unique and sometimes they're just common but thats alright. Its the common things that brings people together. I think that people need to live their lives as they want and stop being so fake in order to be "unique" when that defies the whole purpose of "uniqueness".

Well, that was very deep!

Audrey Hepburn's 85th birthday

Aloha

So today is Audrey Hepburns 85th birthday. Audrey Hepburn is one of my all time favourite actresses. I love everything about her from her beauty to effortless sophisticated style. She was born in 1929 and acted through Hollywoods golden age. She tragically died in 1993 from appendiceal cancer. She did many inspiring acts throughout her life, of which I find the setting up of the "Audrey Hepburn Childrens Fund" truly amazing.

I even made this clock at school!!

To celebrate her iconic life on film- I put together my top  4 Audrey Hepburn films. So here goes.

Roman Holiday
In this film Audrey Hepburn plays a European princess who's life is restricted. This all changes on her European tour when she escapes her guards in Rome and falls in love with an American man. Roman holiday is a classic rom-com and a great film. Set in the 50s the style is chic and sophisticated.

Sabrina
In this film Audrey Hepburn plays the daughter of a household chauffeur. The family that uses the chauffeur are 2 brothers. These two brothers both have a interest in Sabrina. This is an all time favourite and I would definitely recommend this to any fan of romantic films.

Breakfast At Tiffanys
I think this is probably Audrey Hepburns most iconic and famous film. In this film she plays a NYC socialite Holly Golightly. A writer moves in to her apartment block and so begins the adventure of Paul and Holly. Based on the book by Truman Capote which is on my to-read list!

Funny Face
This is probably my favourite Audrey Hepburn film. It tells the story of book shop
clerk that gets brought into the fashion industry by a impromptu fashion shoot. This  is a great musical starring another one of my all time favourites Fred Astaire! If you are going to watch any of the films I've mentioned make it Funny Face.

Summer Style Essential: Bag

Everyone needs a nice bag for the summer season. A bag that captures the summer spirit and updates your spring/summer style. Even though the British summer can be quite unpredictable there is something quite assuring knowing whatever the weather; be it pouring with rain or super hot, your accessories are on trend this season.

As fellow fashion fanatics will know, pastel colours are a huge trend , so adhering to that-My summer bag is a mint mini bowler bag from Dorothy Perkins. This bag is available in different pastel colours and is £18.
Love the gold detail around the handles.

This bag can be used as a shoulder bag or a sassy bag to hand hold

Mixing up your pastels creates a great look. Pair mint with soft blues and pink or even white.

All you need to do now is pack up your stuff and your ready to go- looking fabulous!! White goes well with pastels and mono chrome so I have my circle sunglasses from primark for only £3!!! I always make sure I carry a book EVERY WHERE I go! En ce moment its 12 years a slave by Solomon Northup which the film was based on.

I'm sure you'd all look super snazzy with your summery bags and accessories.

"I LIKED THEM FIRST"

Bonjour mes amis!

So today I would like to talk about the phrase "I liked them first". This is a sentence I have used many times myself in the context of bands or artists that I had discovered before they made it into pop culture. I found that in todays day and age there is an almost struggle and burning desire to be unique; have your own interests. So you're constantly on the lookout for something that can become "your" thing. Once you've found that thing there is a feeling of immense pride in yourself which is diminished when you hear your favourite band on kiss fm. (This happened to me recently with the band American Authors.)

Then, once your special thing is shared with everyone at school or in your community it just isn't special anymore. You're just another screaming fan with  a 5SOS tee shirt.
At these times the most natural thing to say to these new so-called "fans" is I LIKED THEM FIRST. Sometimes when I say this, the reaction is just a laugh and an "alright, calm down-we believe you".I normally get really annoyed at these things and I feel like I have to stop liking the band/artist/book but recently I've realised that just because other people begin to like something that I do,it doesnt mean I have to stop being a fan. It just means that they discovered something later than you.

However this attitude is still not leaving me, I still have a tendency to scream I LIKED THEM BEFORE YOU. YOU ARE NOT A TRUE FAN. I AM. So from now on I am going to try to keep calm and just share my interests with other people. I'll let you know how it goes! Comment if you've ever felt like this
